Let's face it there is no season that isn't rough on our skin, in the summer the sun burns us, in the fall, the wind dries our skin out, in the spring it's wet and cold then hot which means our skin doesn't know how to behave. The key to great summer skin or great skin is to adjust your skincare routine accordingly.
The first rule of thumb to remember is that skin is always in. No matter what makeup trends are in, no amount of makeup can cover ugly skin and surely doesn't nurture it. When choosing a skin care routine, there are a few things that should not change no matter what the season is.
#1- Always use SPF. All because you can't see the sun, doesn't mean it isn't there wreaking havoc on your skin and plotting its demise. No matter what the weather is, make sure to add SPF separately from your moisturizer to get the best results. When purchasing SPF make sure you do your research, some products don’t measure up to what their labels claim. Anthelios by LaRoche Posay tested 100% for the SPF claimed on the bottle. I highly recommend this one.

#2 – Wash your face day & night. People fear that during these dry times that washing the face too much can dry out their skin. FALSE. Washing your face twice a day not only takes off the day's remnants, but it also slows down the skin aging process and essentially helping yourself look younger longer ( complete routine should be done each time, night and day may vary in a product). My current favorite is Soap and Glory’s Vitamin C Facial Wash. I am all about brightening and evening out my skin right now, and this stuff works amazingly.

#3- Wash your hair- Yes, that's right wash your hair on a normal basis based on your hair type, for some that may be daily for others that may be once a week, but do it. Gravity is a huge factor in the condition of our skin. Over time the oils and other product that we put in our hair run down our face over time when the hair has gotten all that it needs This can eventually clog pores and cause other issues.
The next few steps are a part of a normal routine, however, in the summer time, it may be necessary to switch a product or two to give your skin the jolt of energy that it needs to look sun-kissed on a rainy day.

#2- Change your Toner- Toner is not an optional step, they may look the same, but they serve different purposes. Some help to lighten spots, some help to even the skin tone and others may just be astringent. During the summer I switch over to a toning lotion that is intended to tone and cleanse off dead skin, but it also has a moisture component. The best one of the market that I have tried ( I have tried them all !), is Estee Lauder Nutritious Radiant Vitality Energy Lotion Intense ( it's a mouthful I know, but it works). This toner not only tones, it removes dead skin cells that may have been missed during the cleaning phase but doesn't leave your face feeling dry like other toners. This is a great toner no matter what the next phase might be which can be a mask, night cream, or moisturizer.

#4- Change your face wash- This one is probably the toughest one because it will always depend on what your skin needs. Although I use a Clarisonic Mia 2 ( holy grail !), I make it a point to change the face wash. In the summer gel based face, washes tend to yield the results I need to keep my skin cleansed and healthy. During the summer it may be best to use a cream cleanser. This could be the exact opposite based on your skin type, but cream cleansers tend to be more gentle on dehydrated skin from the summer heat.
Remember your skin is exactly that, your skin. It will change based on weather, diet, hormones, and many other entities. The key is to listen to your body and watch how your skin reacts in each condition. If exfoliating too much is not helping stop and change to a more gentle cleanser. If your moisturizer isn't doing the job, go to a Sephora, Ulta, or other skin care outlet and grab samples until you find what works for you. Remember radiant skin will always be the trend.
